Performances of Moeran's
Symphony in G minor, are very few and far between -
for those who'd travelled many miles to Shrewsbury Abbey on
a blustery November evening in 2001 this was the first - and
may unfortunately be the last - opportunity to hear this wonderful
work in the flesh.
With this in mind I took along my Hi-8 camcorder
and a pair of professional microphones and set up a tripod
in the central aisle of the Abbey to make a recording of the
concert. I'm delighted to say that the Orchestral Committee
has agreed to making this concert freely available on the
Internet to visitors of this site.
The Symphony is by no means an easy work to
play, as the various commercial recordings testify, and would
at first sight seem far too ambitious a project for any amateur
orchestra to embark upon. I am happy to report that the Shrewsbury
Symphony more than do justice to the work, and even for those
who have heard the various recordings made down the years
since its debut in 1943, there are revelations here that make
this a worthwhile download. It is also a good indication of
what an accomplished amateur orchestra can expect to achieve
with a work of this complexity.
